Julian is in eastern San Diego County, and is at a higher elevation than much of the County. It is the site of gold mines and was part of the California gold rush that brought many people across the country to become rich. I hit my head against the ceiling of the mine a few times walking through – they had padding on it to protect people, but the gold miners don’t appear to have been very tall. The town went from being well known for its mines, to being well known for apples, and there are a number of bakeries in town that now produce apple pies in volume. I made sure I stopped for some warm apple pie with Cinnamon ice cream when I visited.
