Greg Chappell believes Rishabh Pant is transforming cricket with his unconventional batting style. The former India coach praised Pant's match-winning ability, noting his significant impact in the Headingley Test.
India lost the Headingley Test, but Pant's brilliance was undeniable. He achieved the remarkable feat of scoring centuries in both innings, underscoring his potential to change the game.
Chappell highlighted Pant's rapid scoring rate, crucial for winning matches. "His was a phenomenal performance... He is reinventing the game as a batsman," Chappell said, praising the Indian wicketkeeper. He also emphasized that some of Pant's shots are not in any coaching manual.
Pant etched his name in history, becoming only the second wicketkeeper-batter, after Andy Flower, to achieve a century in each innings of a Test match.
Chappell, speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, acknowledged the influence of modern technology and bats on shot-making. He described Pant as an exciting player, whose unpredictable approach keeps the opposition on edge.
Drawing comparisons to another iconic wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist, Chappell, regarded as one of Australia's finest batters post-Don Bradman, lauded Pant's exciting cricket.
He emphasized the value of having a wicketkeeper who can bat at that level and score runs quickly.
Good start for Gill as captain
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's captaincy, believing he showed promise and will improve with experience. He acknowledged India's loss but highlighted the positives. He also added that Shubman Gill had a great start to his career as a Test match captain, and he will only get better and better as a captain.
