India's head coach also reiterated that despite the loss, Jasprit Bumrah would play just two more Tests as per a pre-series plan

India's recent Test defeat at Headingley has sparked debate, with attention focusing on the team's batting collapses. Despite scoring 835 runs and featuring five centurions, including Rishabh Pant with a century in each innings, India fell short against England.

The pivotal moments were two batting collapses:

  • 7 wickets for 41 runs in the first innings
  • 6 wickets for 31 runs in the second innings

These collapses undermined India's strong position after winning the toss and allowed England to chase down a target of 371 with relative ease. This marks India's seventh defeat in their last nine Tests.

Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century, mentioned the team aimed for a target around 435. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir believed a first-innings score of 570 or 580 would have secured dominance for India.

Despite the lower order's struggles, Gambhir defended their efforts. Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna faced criticism for their shot selection, but Gambhir emphasized that failure is a part of the game.

"Look, first of all, it's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir stated. He acknowledged the disappointment within the team, highlighting their awareness of the missed opportunity. He added, "Even proper batters fail. Hopefully they'll learn, and hopefully we'll get better performances from our tail. And that is not the only reason we lost the Test match."

Another contributing factor was India's poor catching performance. They dropped seven catches, including a costly one by Yashasvi Jaiswal that allowed Ben Duckett to score a match-defining 149. Gill admitted the team needed to improve their catching standards, especially on challenging wickets like those at Headingley.

While acknowledging the team's youth, Gambhir dismissed it as an excuse for the defeat. "Every defeat is bad. It's not about a young team or an experienced team. It's an Indian team," he asserted. "We take pride in winning each and every game for our country. A young team is not an excuse."

Gambhir reiterated the team's commitment to winning and representing the nation with pride.

In other news, Gambhir confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will play only two more Test matches in the series, as per a pre-arranged workload management plan. The decision on which two Tests Bumrah will participate in remains undecided. Gambhir expressed confidence in the team's bowling attack, even without Bumrah's presence for all matches. He emphasized the trust placed in the bowlers, stating that their selection was based on belief in their abilities, not mere hope.
