In a public plea, Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has urged Vladimir Kramnik, a former World Champion, to reconcile amidst a defamation lawsuit. Aronian's letter, shared on social media, expresses deep respect for Kramnik, acknowledging his significant influence. This follows Kramnik's lawsuit against Chessdom, GM David Navara, and others, stemming from disputes over alleged online cheating.

In an open letter published on social media, Levon Aronian, the Armenian chess grandmaster, has made a public plea to his friend and former World Champion, Vladimir Kramnik, seeking reconciliation after Kramnik initiated a defamation lawsuit that has stirred considerable controversy within the chess community.

Addressing Kramnik with respect, Aronian's letter expresses concern rather than anger or criticism. "Dear Vladimir Kramnik, forgive me for addressing you publicly," Aronian wrote, highlighting the gravity of the situation and his desire for a peaceful resolution.

The open letter follows Kramnik's decision to file a civil defamation case in Geneva against Chess.com, the news website Chessdom, and Czech Grandmaster David Navara. Kramnik accuses them of defaming him following disputes over alleged cheating in online chess.

Aronian's letter serves as both a personal tribute and a public intervention, referencing Kramnik’s influential role in his career. He described Kramnik as one of his "chess parents," acknowledging the significant impact the former World Champion had on shaping his chess intellect.

He reflected on Kramnik's resilience, citing his victories against Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko, as well as the controversial "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov. Aronian emphasized Kramnik's strength and spirit throughout these challenging episodes.

However, Aronian also addressed what he perceives as a worrying shift in Kramnik's recent behavior. "You are fighting your own demons," Aronian wrote, recognizing the emotional burden of Kramnik's fight against alleged cheating in online chess.

Earlier this year, Kramnik suggested that Navara had cheated, prompting Navara to publicly describe the detrimental impact of the accusations on his mental health. Kramnik responded by demanding legal action or silence, culminating in the lawsuit that has been met with disapproval from many in the chess world.

Grandmasters, including Pavel Eljanov, have voiced their support for Navara, with Eljanov stating that "David is one of the most honest people in chess," a sentiment shared by many others.

Aronian concluded his appeal with a message of unity, stating, "We are a family... let us start from a fresh page.” In a chess world facing division, Aronian's plea highlights the need for reconciliation.
