As India prepares for the crucial second Test against England at Edgbaston, changes to the playing XI appear inevitable following their defeat in the series opener. A key point of discussion is the potential resting of Jasprit Bumrah for workload management. Additionally, other players might be omitted as coach Gautam Gambhir seeks a stronger team composition to level the series.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has voiced a clear opinion regarding one specific change: the inclusion of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. On the Beyond23 Podcast, Clarke emphasized that including Kuldeep is an “absolute no-brainer.”
India's bowling attack struggled to make a significant impact at Headingley. While Bumrah impressed with his control and skill, the supporting bowlers, including Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna, failed to maintain consistent pressure or take wickets regularly. Clarke suggests that Kuldeep could be the solution to this issue.
“Regarding the bowling, while I don’t want to blame anyone individually, India must play Kuldeep Yadav. He is a genuine wicket-taker and could have significantly altered the outcome of the previous Test,” Clarke stated.
Clarke also noted India's tendency to prioritize batting depth, potentially at the expense of a frontline spinner. He believes that in English conditions, the focus should be on selecting bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets.
Former England batter Nick Knight shares a similar sentiment, also supporting Kuldeep’s inclusion. Knight suggested that England’s aggressive batting approach could be challenged by Kuldeep’s variations, particularly if the Edgbaston pitch offers any assistance to spin. He believes Kuldeep's presence could lead to match-defining moments if he finds his form.
The team announcement for the second Test is highly anticipated, with the calls for Kuldeep’s inclusion growing louder.
